Profile Taj Amir ( Islamic Pop) - Taj Amir was born in Columbia, South Carolina on 17 December 1976. Ethnically, he is Dominican and African-American. He was born into a Southern Baptist (mother/stepfather)/Catholic (father/stepmother) family and had more of a "spiritual" upbringing than a "religious" one. From the ages of 11 to 17, while living in Fayetteville, North Carolina, he took up comparative religion and applied critical studies to the scriptures of the world. He concluded on Friday, 18 November 1994, that the way of Islaam (Submission to the Will of Allaah) was the path to which he was being guided to walk upon.
Since elementary school, Taj Amir has always been musically inclined. He started playing the Recorder and eventually picked up the Bass Clarinet. Upon mastering the Bass Clarinet, he went on to do the same with the Tenor Saxophone and Bassoon; dabbling here and there with the French Horn and the famous Quads of the Percussion Section. In high school he was a member of the marching band, jazz club, and classical ensemble. He was also a member of a local singing group: Special Request. At that time he was known as BMI recording artist: Cinsere. During a performance with the group at a local talent show (where several scouts and A&R reps were present), he was approached by a former co-producer of Jodeci's first album (Forever My Lady) to pursue a solo career. Taj Amir declined the offer due to several reasons, but the most important one was due to having already decided that it was going to be his last performance. He had come to a crossroads in his life and he had decided to leave the pursuit of secular music and walk a sacred path instead.
Upon accepting Islaam and realizing how controversial the issue of music was amongst the scholars and the general Muslim populace, in 1994 he decided to put down the mantle of music, never expecting to pick it up again. Ten years later, he was introduced to Nasheed by listening to the music produced from the likes of Dawood Warnsby Ali, Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens), Kacebee Abdullah, Sons of Light (formerly "The Boyz of Motown"), Sami Yusuf, and Zain Bikha.
After conducting an in-depth study regarding the issue of music in Islaam (e.g. "The Islamic Ruling on Music & Singing in the Light of the Quraan, the Sunnah and the Consensus of our Pious Predecessors" by Abu Bilal Mustafa Al-Kanadi), he decided to return to the world of music for the specific purpose of utilizing it as a medium to praise the Supreme Being, the only One worthy and having the right to be worshipped: Allaah (God / Dios / Dieu / Dio / Deus / Gott / Gut / El / Yahweh / etc... by whatever language you speak to refer to Him and Him ALONE)... and share the experience with those who choose to listen and appreciate the effort.
